This, in turn, will impinge upon the size of your balance bike bag. Sure enough, you could get the biggest size, and be done with it. However, if it’s not a snug fit (and this goes for almost every product), the bike will dangle inside, wear out the lining, perhaps even make a tear in the fabric, especially if the manufacturer skimped on the quality.

You might be asking – Why do I need a balance bike bag? Truth be told, you don’t. However, considering the alternative (carrying the bike by the frame), it’s really not an outlandish expense. Speaking of which, here’s the first thing to consider when shopping for one – the price. Usually, they won’t go over two digits. Some will be cheap as dirt but aim at around 50ish dollars for the best balance between value and price.

Size

Of course, the first thing you’d want to look out for in terms of features is the size – make sure the bag is a snug fit (or as close to a snug fit as possible), so as to avoid the already mentioned wear and tear. On this note, you should really get a quality product. Don’t go Ebenezer Scrooge here and get something cheap; it won’t be like that in the long run.

Material

Go for a breathable and durable material, such as cotton, with at least one mesh pouch on the side of the main compartment. (Incorporating breathable pouches is important, as having decent airflow helps dry off sweaty helmets, so that they’re ready for the next ride.) Of course, you’d be hard-pressed to find pure cotton bags, as almost all of them will have at least some percentage of Spandex. This is good, though, as it provides just enough elasticity to fit that extra pair of socks or whatnot.

You may be in luck to have a big yard or a park nearby where your kid can ride their bike safely. However, if it happens to be a considerable walk to the nearest such place, it’s only practical to have a carrying bag for their bike, and a comfortable one, at that. So, make sure to find a bag with a padded back panel to keep the hard parts on the bike from poking outwards. On a similar note, go for something with padded carry handles, for your convenience. Versatility is desirable, to say the least, so it might be a good idea to get one with a shoulder strap to complement the carry handles.

Versatility

Since we’re on the topic of versatility, it’s a good idea to get something with lots of pockets. Most bags will have the main compartment, often zippered, with a mesh pouch on the side for helmets. Some will incorporate another pouch for water bottles, gloves, towels, pad sets, bandages, antiseptics, bug spray, whatever you feel is necessary. Most parents will carry an additional bag with such equipment, and having plenty of pockets on your balance bike bag could go a long way to eliminating the need for this.

Speaking of compartments, let’s just get back briefly to the main one, where you’re supposed to put the bike itself. One thing you want to make sure is that the opening is big enough to let you pack the bike and get it out without a hassle. The extra-long zipper is a nice thing to have in this regard. Additionally, it would be nice if the main compartment is lockable, for sake of security. This is not an essential feature, but it sure is a welcome one, and it can come into play particularly if you’re flying out with the kids.

Finally, at least as far as the main compartment is concerned, you should find a bag with water resistant inner liner. Why? Well, kids are not the cleanest of creatures, and they have this uncanny ability to find mud even in Nevada during summer months. With this in mind, you have to count on having to carry a dirty bike from time to time, and having a water resistant inner liner helps with the cleaning.

So, let’s recap – make sure you get good-quality material, lots of pockets, and always check if the size is a snug fit. As far as the budget goes, although it’s may seem as the most important criterion, it’s not. The important thing is not to get either the cheapest or the most expensive thing, but the biggest bang for the buck.
